ATLANTA, Ga. - The Berry College baseball team played Oglethorpe University in the rubber match game of the series on Sunday. Oglethorpe took game three by the score of 9-6.
Pacing the hitting was Riley Uhls and Chance Edmonds, who each dropped in three hits. On the mound, Cam Welsh saw the most action with 3.1 innings pitched and three strikeouts.Â
Marco Cabrera, making his first career start, got the ball first for Berry in the crucial game three. Cabrera worked a quick first, sitting the Stormy Petrels down in order in the first inning. Oglethorpe fought back in the second, taking Cabrera out of the game and scoring four runs before Cam Welsh came in to put out the fire. The Stormy Petrels added a fifth run in the third inning to make the score 5-0 after three.
A two-out two RBI single from Chase Edmonds brought in two runs to cut the deficit to three in the top of the fourth. The three-run deficit was short-lived, as Oglethorpe responded with three runs to set the score at 8-2. A pair of doubles from Riley Uhls and Chance Edmonds scored the third run for Berry.
The stormy Petrels tacked on one more to increase the lead to six and hold a 9-3 lead going into the seventh inning. Jon Strydom threw up a zero in the seventh inning, and Mason Schoonover followed that with another zero in the eighth.
Berry tried to put together a comeback in the ninth, scoring three and having the go-ahead run at the plate, but grounded into a game-ending double play to secure the win for the Stormy Petrels.
Berry will be back in action on Tuesday, when they will play Covenant College starting at 6 pm.
