GEORGETOWN, TX – The Vikings (16-5, 1-2 SAA) avenged their losses on Saturday against the Southwestern University Pirates, preventing the sweep after defeating them 8-1.
The Vikings came out on fire in the first inning, loading the bases early without surrendering any outs. Ava Fouts had the Vikings' first run following an RBI by Kennedy Moody. After the first score, the Vikings quickly cashed in on the early momentum, earning 4 runs before the end of the top of the first. The Pirates couldn't get themselves on the scoreboard through the bottom of the first, and at the top of the second, and Elly Bennett added to the total after Lauren Cothren singled to left field.
After an explosive start, the Vikings cooled off through the third inning, but where the Vikings cooled off, JJ Sweat turned up the heat, only giving up two hits from the second inning to the sixth inning, helping the Vikings keep the Pirates scoreless.
At the top of the sixth, the Vikings extended their lead to six after Brooke Thompson rounded the field, but they couldn't extend their lead much further after earning two quick outs. The Pirates finally managed to erase their zero from the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, but already with two outs, they couldn't put together an effort to cut further into the deficit.
The Vikings brought their lead back up to seven with their possession in the seventh inning and made quick work of the Pirates to wrap up the game, the final score 8-1.
The Vikings return to Berry next Saturday, March 28th, for Alumni Day. They'll be looking to extend their win streak to three in a doubleheader against the Millsaps College Majors, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
