MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Baseball took on Maryville College Tuesday afternoon in the Vikings' first midweek matchup of the year. Berry lost a close one, 6-5 in a heartbreaker.
JohnMark Christopher took the ball for Berry in the first inning. The freshman made quick work of the first two batters before allowing two straight hits to give Maryville a 1-0 lead in the first. The Vikings responded quickly by the way of a double from
Riley Uhls to tie the game at one a piece. After a couple of zeroes put up by both pitchers, Uhls was able to record his second double of the day and put the Vikings up 2-1 going into the fourth inning.
Chance Edmonds added on with two RBI's of his own with a single into right-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Christopher then was able to sit down his last 10 batters to end the fifth inning, allowing only one run in his first collegiate start.
Wynn Boren followed as the first pitcher out of the bullpen for Berry, allowing one run during his only inning of work.
Going into the bottom of the sixth, Berry held a 4-2 lead.
Mason Schoonover entered the game on the mound and ran into some trouble before being relieved by
Jon Strydom. Strydom made quick work and was able to escape the jam in the seventh and add on another zero in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Scots had a costly throwing error to allow
Xavier Byams to come around and add a crucial run to push the score to 5-3.
Cole Porter was called on to close the game out and ran into some trouble, allowing Maryville to take the lead 6-5. Berry was able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but unfortunately failed to push a run across, dropping their first game of the season.
Berry will be back in action on Friday, where the Vikings travel to Ohio to take on Marietta College.
