MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Vikings reign victorious in a 9-inning nail bitter versus the Tigers of Sewanee, and secure the series sweep with a 5-4 final score.
Starting in the circle for the Vikings was Hannah Gore, with 4 strikeouts in 2 innings pitched.
Offense for the Vikings pushed one run in the 2nd inning, starting momentum after Kennedy Moody led the inning off with a double shot to right field. A SAC bunt by Erica Bennett moved Moody to third, who scored after an error from the catcher.
Casey Holloway entered the circle in relief of Gore going into the 3rd inning.
The Tigers were able to tie the game back up at 1-1 in the top of the 3rd, and the Vikings answered back. Ava Fouts singled through the infield and advanced to second base following an Elly Bennett SAC bunt. Now on second, Fouts took advantage of a passed ball and scored. With the Vikings up 2-1, they faced the challenge of a weather delay which interrupted the inning.
Following the delay, the Viking offense fell flat and remained scoreless until the 7th inning.
Currently undefeated, Ava Fouts was on the rubber at the top of the 5th inning, closing out the game and taking her 11th win this season with 3 strikeouts.
The Tigers scraped 2 runs in the 5th inning, putting the score at 2-3 through the 7th inning.
A determined Viking offense rallied together, pushing one run in the bottom of the 7th, after Ava Fouts put herself in scoring position with a lead off triple. Elly Bennett followed with a hard ball to the infield, allowing Fouts to score and sending the Vikings into extras.
Sewanee fought back, stringing hits together to push one run in the top of the 9th inning.
Down 3-4, Elly Bennett started the rally with a single through the right side. Lauren Cothern followed up with another single, pushing Bennett to third base. Kennedy Moody stepped up to the plate, scoring Elly Bennett with an RBI SAC fly. Tied up at 4-4, freshman Erica Bennett crushed a single to left field for the walk off victory. Final score 5-4.
The Vikings will be back in action this Saturday, as they close out their regular season conference play facing the Majors of Millsaps College. Games times for the double header match up being at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
