MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Berry Baseball fell on the road this evening to Maryville College 12-10.
Alex Knapp led off the game for the Vikings, walking and then stealing to second to get in scoring position. A pop up from
Austin Jetmore would score Knapp before the end of the top of the first, Vikings up 1-0.
CJ Whaley got the start on the mound for Berry pitching 1.2 innings before being relieved by
Jackson Collett.
Maryville was able to answer Berry's first run with two hits leading to one run before Whaley struck out the last batter for out number three.
In the second inning, once again both teams would score a run. Now tied at two heading into the third, both pitchers held strong taking out the next three batters for a quick third inning followed by three combined hits and no runs in the fourth through top of the sixth.
The bottom of the sixth is where Maryville came to life, seeing three different Berry pitchers as
Nicholas Angelakos came in relief of Collet and
Cole Porter came in to get the last out. Six hits and six runs got the best of the Vikings. After the Scots scored two, a crucial error came at third base, scoring the fifth run for Maryville followed by an out with the next batter which would have got the team out of the inning. However, two more runs crossed the plate before Berry could finish it out.
Down 8-2, the Viking's offense responded in the top of the seventh with 5 hits and four runs. A double from Knapp and singles from other Vikings, Berry was able to bring the score within two runs.
A two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh extended the score again at 10-6, Scots. In the ninth, Berry had some ground to cover down 10-7 after scoring one more run in the eighth. The Vikings found three runs before Maryville could record the final out of the game to take the win over Berry.
