FOREST GROVE, OR - Women's lacrosse continued their win streak on Friday night, as they dominated Pacific University by a final score of 22-2.
The Vikings utilized a balanced scoring attack with Dani Taraska, Isabel Fransen, and Molley Cross all pouring in four goals. Katie Claire Smith and AnnaKate Estock also added three goals apiece to pace the Berry attack on what was a masterful night for the Vikings out west.
The action got going with midfielder Dani Taraska attacking the defense in transition and finishing a shot that stunned the Pacific goalie to make the score 1-0. Just moments later, AnnaKate Estock found an open Molley Cross behind the goal who weaved her way to the front and scored another goal to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead with 11:40 left in the first quarter. Not even a minute later, Estock probed her way into scoring position and sent in another shot that scorched the back of the net, giving Berry a 3-0 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play in the first period.
The Vikings continued their dominance with a free position shot that Hayden Clement took full advantage of as she finished another goal for Berry who would take a 4-0 lead. With 6:44 to play in the first quarter, Katie Claire Smith shoveled in a pass to Estock who did the rest with a nifty underhanded shot that extended the Viking lead to 5-0.
Berry's terrific first quarter showing continued with masterful execution from Cross who received an entry pass from Taraska and then gracefully tossed the ball into the goal for Berry's sixth unanswered goal of the first period. Berry tacked on four more goals to close out the quarter with a commanding 10-0 lead, including some final-minute magic as Maddie Dahl swung a beautiful pass to Cross who did the rest to cap off a resounding showing in the opening quarter of play.
Isabel Fransen got in on the action early in the second quarter as the Vikings continued to be aggressive in their quick game. Fransen benefitted from another sharp pass from Taraska and Fransen finished it off to continue the onslaught with an 11-0 lead. A few minutes later, Estock found an open Smith, who punctured the back of the net with yet another goal to make the score 12-0 with about twelve minutes left in the first half. Berry's hot start would finally cool down in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter, as the wet conditions stifled the attacks of both teams, leaving the Viking lead at 12-0 at the end of the first half.
The third quarter got going the same way as the second quarter did with Isabel Fransen dancing her way through defenders and scoring to make the score 13-0 with 13:50 to play in the third period. Berry continued to keep the pressure on Pacific, as Taraska dished the ball to Cross who converted her fourth goal of the game, leaving Berry with a 14-0 lead.
A free position shot from Fransen would result in another goal for the Vikings, as they continued to terrorize the Boxer defense. The Boxers finally responded at the nine-minute mark to make the score 15-1. The Vikings got back to their dominant ways in the final minutes of the third period, as Estock, Smith, and Taraska extended the Viking lead to 18-1.
The final period began in the same fashion as the past two quarters, as Fransen utilized a fast break to evade a defender and finish another scoring opportunity past the outstretched stick of the Boxer goalie, making the score 19-1 with just over 13 minutes to play. A few moments later, Dahl ruptured the back of the net with the Vikings' twentieth goal of the game that made the score 20-1. Just a minute later, sophomore Lydia Whitlock penetrated the teeth of the Pacific defense and sent through a strike that found the back of the net to give the Vikings a resounding 21-1 lead with just over ten minutes left in the game.
Pacific responded with a goal with just 20 seconds left, but the Vikings enjoyed a 22-2 victory in the home stretch of their west coast road trip.
The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow to face Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, at 4 PM ET.
