MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry Softball team took to an early afternoon matchup with the Alma Scots at Kay Williams field, sweeping them 7-4 and 3-2.
Game One: Berry 7 - Alma 4
It was
Hannah Gore in the circle for all seven innings of game one to capture her third win of the season. The Scots of Alma saw five strikeouts from Gore and seven hits.
At the plate, reigning SAA Athlete of the Week
Lauren Cothern was 3-4 scoring two runs while teammates
Katie Parker,
Elly Bennett, and
Kensi Ody each batted in two runners.
The Vikings got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning after scrapping by in the top of the inning with two errors.
Erica Bennett scored the first run and
Elly Bennett's two run double put Berry up 3-0 in front of a great home crowd.
Gore kept things rolling on her end seeing six batters total throughout the next two innings. While her offense dominated in the bottom of the third with 4 runs on 6 hits. Third baseman,
Katie Parker's two run single notched a 5-0 lead and Ody produced one of her own for two more runs before Alma could find their third out.
The Scots answered two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth and the sixth. Gore and the Viking defense found their way out of the bind to close out the game in the top of the 7th.
Game Two: Berry 3 - Alma 2
The second game was much slower than the first when speaking on action with less runs produced. However,
Casey Holloway had a great start in the circle with three strikeouts until Alma found the first run of the game late in the sixth.
With Alma on top for the first time of the day, Berry had to respond. The team did just that in the bottom of the inning with
Kennedy Moody's triple saving the day and brining in two runners: Cothern and
Elly Bennett who reached on singles. Starting pitcher, Holloway would bring in Moody on a single the next at bat to take back their advantage on their home field.
Now with
Ava Fouts in relief for Holloway to close out the game, she pulled out a tough sixth inning and finished it off in the seventh. The seventh was dicey as Alma left three stranded with the Vikings doing everything they could to hold off runners. Ultimately, Alma would get one more across until the final out was recorded.
Berry returns to action this Saturday against Covenant College on Kay Williams Field at 1:00 and 3:00 PM ET.
