DELAWARE, Oh. - The Berry Women's Lacrosse team took to the road against an unfamiliar opponent this evening, Ohio Wesleyan, taking them down in double overtime 13-12.
Dani Taraska's four goals lifted the Vikings to victory while
Myskina Bolavong held it down between the pipes on defense.
Taraska opened up the scoring in the first with a quick goal after securing the opening draw control and
Morgan Barton kept things rolling in the ninth minute to boost up the Vikings 2-0 on the road. Ohio Wesleyan shook off the cold weather jitters and caught fire with a 3-0 run to close out the first period and take the lead in the final 40 seconds.
The 3-0 run continued with two more unanswered goals in the second putting Berry behind 5-2 before Taraska found her second goal of the game and Maddie Dahl pushed on through to cut the lead to one.
In the final 20-seconds of the first half, Taraska took control scoring two more goals to tie the game at six heading to halftime.
Katie Claire Smith recaptured the lead for Berry to begin the third but Ohio Wesleyan refused to go away and answered that goal and the next one from
Molley Cross before claiming a 10-9 lead heading into what each team thought was the final period.
Maddie Mashburn, Barton, and
AnnaKate Estock notched the Vikings a 3-0 run to open up the fourth and taking a commanding 12-10 lead. Two late goals from the home team with 44 seconds left gave Berry not enough time to end it.
In the first overtime, shots from Taraska could not find the net and Bolavong's save pushed for the second overtime in sudden death.
Star freshmen,
Isabel Fransen ended it with 4:19 to go as Estock threw her the ball and she whirled it past the goalie for a double-overtime thriller victory.
Berry continues their road stance at Capital University on Sunday at 10:00 AM ET.
