MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Berry Softball took to Maryville, Tennessee this evening to take on the Scots of Maryville College, a rematch from last year's regional game. This time the Vikings split with Maryville falling 5-6 and then defeating the home team 3-1.
Game One: Berry 5 - Maryville 6
Late seventh inning runs from the Scots propelled them over the Vikings in game one. Berry began the game hot going up early 4-0.
All runs were sparked by sophomore
Ava Fouts single that scored
Bradynn Belcher and
Brooke Thompson coming in for the second run later in the second inning.
The Viking kept rolling with SAA Pitcher of the Week,
Hannah Gore in the circle. Gore only allowed one hit backed by great Berry defense through the third inning. Offensively in the third,
Katie Parker homered over the left field fence for the first time this season for Berry's third run.
In the fourth,
Latifa Madesko's sacrifice fly scored Berry's fourth run as Maryville tried to get hot with three hits, but was unable to score any.
Things began to change in the bottom of the fifth.
Megan Rapillo came in relief of Gore after a triple. The home team scored two in the bottom of the inning and added a third run in the sixth.
Now only up a run, the Vikings needed to bring back their hot offense, but would only be able to score one more on a Parker sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.
Maryville found three runs in the bottom of the final inning to take the one run advantage over Berry.
Game Two: Berry 3 - Maryville 1
Game two was highlighted by a homerun from freshman,
Kennedy Moody while
Ava Fouts took her second win of the season in the circle and
Casey Holloway claimed her first save of the season.
The first run for the Vikings came in the second with bases loaded,
Erica Bennett was walked which pushed
Elly Bennett across the plate for the first run.
Fouts pitched the first four innings allowing only two hits and one run before Holloway came in relief in the last three innings with four strikeouts!
Moody's two run homer solidified the game offensively while Holloway closed it out on defense after the Scots scored their only run.
The Vikings will be back in action in Decatur, Georgia, next Friday to take on the Scotties of Agnes Scott College.
