ATLANTA, Ga. - The Berry College Vikings volleyball team swept the Oglethorpe University Petrels 3-0 for the second time this season in SAA play on Tuesday evening.
The Vikings jumped all over the Petrels from the start as they raced out to a 15-1 advantage led by three kills each from Lura Underwood and Madie Whitehead. The Petrels answered to make it 16-6 but the Vikings continued to dominate the set as they closed on a 4-0 run finished off by an Ava Brovet kill to win 25-10 and take a 1-0 lead.
The Petrels looked to bounce back in the second set as they took an early 4-2 lead but the Vikings quickly answered with a kill by Underwood set up by Brovet to spark a 4-0 run and take a 6-4 lead. The Petrels tried to keep it close as they trailed 13-12 but the Vikings took control with a 7-0 run led by two kills from Underwood to extend their lead to 20-12. The Vikings would then go on to take the second set 25-15 and a 2-0 lead.Â
The Vikings continued their momentum into the third set as they opened on a 5-1 run with kills from Underwood and Whitehead. Later with the Vikings ahead 11-6 they opened up their lead to 16-6 with kills from Maddie Dahl and Brovet along with a block by Underwood. The Petrels tried to stage a comeback but the Vikings shut that down as they finished the game on a 3-0 run with two kills from Ryn Gaertner to win 25-11 and 3-0.
Whitehead led the Vikings with 13 kills while Brovet led with 36 assists.
The Vikings continue SAA play on the road as they travel to Danville, KY to take on Centre College on Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 PM.
