MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Men's Soccer prevailed in miraculous fashion over Belhaven University on Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0.
The wet field conditions caused the low-scoring affair to be nothing short of an instant classic defensively by both teams. The Vikings and Blazers were deadlocked in the first period with four shots a piece. Berry's most threatening first half attack would come from Max Albertson with under five minutes left, as he hooked a promising shot just outside the net.
The second half was a gritty battle with both teams refusing to give the other anything easy offensively. The physical defensive display would lead to six cards being dished out, five in the second period alone.
As the second half winded down into the final five minutes of the game, spectators began to accept that the match may end in a draw. The Vikings would show a tremendous amount of resiliency in the final minutes though, putting pressure on the Belhaven goalkeeper multiple times.
With just 48 seconds to play, the Vikings would gain possession off a tremendous carry from Mitch Register down the field who found Tracy Moon racing down the sideline and delivered a dazzling crossing pass to Jack Raulston who positioned himself perfectly to head the ball into the net. Berry would hold strong in the final seconds and win it, 1-0.
The Vikings are riding a three-game winning streak and will be in action again at home on September 20 against Covenant College at 7 PM.
