GREENSBORO, NC - In their 2024 season debut, the Vikings fell at Appenzeller Field on Saturday to the Quakers of Guilford, 1-0.
Berry took charge in the first 15 minutes of action, having majority of the possessions in the span to kick-off their season opener. Gisselle Aitken and
Mia Ries wasted no time getting their foot on the ball with two quick shots in the third minute, one just right and the other being saved by Guilford.
Now, the Quakers controlled the game. After a few substitutions, a quick goal by Guilford in the 27th minute put the home team up 1-0.
The Vikings attempted to tie the game before the half, with two more shots, but both were off target as the teams fought hard the first 45-minutes of play.
Maggie Jones was the starting goal keeper for the Vikings and between the two goalies only two saves occurred across the 90-minute game. Each team's defense showing that they were ready for battle.
Berry had opportunities in the second half including a dangerous cross through the box but failed to find the foot of a Viking on the weak side. Overall, Berry doubled the amount of shots of the Quakers, but the home team found more quality shots, the one being their lone goal that would defeat the Vikings.
In their debut, Berry showed strong and tough, fighting across all 90-minutes against a tough home team.
The Vikings return to action tomorrow, September 1 at Averett University for a 12:00 PM ET start.
