MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Vikings Softball fell in the third game of the Mount Berry Super Regional to Belhaven University, after making a comeback in game two.
Game One Berry 3 - Belhaven 1
The Vikings approached game two of the 2024 Super Regional with a vengeance after yesterday's opening game.
Aggressive from the jump,
Katie White and
Morgan Frye found themselves on base from a walk and an error, and a sacrifice bunt from second baseman,
Lauren Cothern advanced them into scoring position with
Anna Jackson up at bat.
Jackson grounded out but brought White across to secure the 1-0 lead early.
An opening triple from Belhaven on Regional MVP
Danielle Sudick would tie the game at one with the next batter.
As rain approached, Berry started getting hot in the top of the fourth with a Jackson and
Latifa Madesko single, and a walk, the bases were loaded for the Vikings.
Katie White was walked for pinch runner
Rachel Runsick to cross the plate and Frye's single scored
Elly Bennett before the umpires called for a lightning delay.
With Berry up 3-1, in the top of the fourth, a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay tried to impede their success.
However, returning to the field for a new five o'clock start, Sudick closed out the game allowing no more Belhaven runs and backed by her teammates she sealed the deal and forced a game three.
Game Two Berry 2 - Belhaven 3
Game two was a lot slower, with both teams featuring the same lineups as the first game of the day. Exhaustion started to set in with neither team willing to give up, with their seasons on the line.
Two hits in the first inning from
Katie White and
Shelby Daniel scored a Berry run that was answered in the bottom of the inning by the Blazers.
In the second a similar trade of runs happened, but this time it was
Sydney Moroney's huge triple that scored a run for the Vikings.
Tied at two, the game became important in the circle and the field. With Sudick still throwing for Berry, her infield and outfield backed her through the seventh...eighth... and into the ninth inning until the Belhaven catcher grabbed a hold of a ball and placed it over the fence to walk-off the Super Regional.
The Vikings finish their season with more historic numbers, one being the most wins at 46.
