MOUNT BERRY, Ga.- As Berry's Hannah Gore led the charge against Rhodes College with a commanding seven strikeouts, the No. 6-ranked Vikings completed the weekend sweep at Kay Williams Field in six innings with a score of 9-0.
The dominating Sunday afternoon win strengthened the team's repertoire as they remain the only undefeated team in conference play throughout the entire Southern Athletic Association.
Berry (24-3, 9-0 SAA) started junior Gore (6-2)Â in the circle. The right-hander left the Lynx (12-16-1, 5-4 SAA) stunned, surrendering only two hits during the contest. Under Gore's composure and an impressive defensive prowess backing her, not once did a Lynx player advance beyond second base.
Senior Anna Jackson strutted to the plate in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. Morgan Frye and Shelby Daniel occupied first and second base respectively, both reaching on walks. Unwilling to strand her teammates, Jackson scorched the second pitch of the at bat to left center, plating Frye and Daniel as she darted into second base.
The Vikings experienced an offensive drought, creating the illusion of a competitive contest for three innings. Looking to send the Lynx back to Memphis early, Berry found another gear in the bottom of the fifth. Elly Bennett capitalized on an error by the Rhodes second baseman, claiming first base as her own. Pesky Sydney Moroney used the hard infield to her advantage, chopping a ball to third base for an infield hit. Frye, whose presence at the plate intimidated the Lynx's pitching staff into surrendering first base to Frye three times, reached first on a walk with one out, loading the bases. Atlanta native Katie White was instrumental in ending Berry's dry spell. White's single to right field plated Bennett and Moroney, making the score 4-0.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Jackson scored Frye and finalized Jackson's impressive stat sheet of three RBIs on the day. Berry entered the top of the sixth inning with a five-run buffer.
Rhodes' only hard hit of the game came in the top of the sixth inning from pinch hitter Peyton Rohrig, who singled to right field with two outs. Daniel would singlehandedly squash Rohrig's threat by fielding a ground ball up the middle and stepping on second to end the inning without any damage.
Kay Williams Field came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning, beginning when Bennett and Moroney both singled to left field, occupying two bags with no outs. Sophomore Latifa Madesko's number was called by Head Coach Jessica Strong to come off the bench to pinch hit. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Madesko clinched a double down the third base line, scoring Bennett. Occupying third, Moroney used her speed to her advantage for the second time of the game, scoring on a wild pitch and increasing the Viking lead to seven. Feeling the pressure, Lynx pitcher Kate Ledlie walked two consecutive Berry batters. Daniel would be the last batter that Ledlie faced as she walked the game off with a double to left field, plating two more Vikings and completing the run-rule victory.
The Vikings will be idle until traveling eight hours to Conway, Arkansas to compete against conference foe Hendrix College for a three-game series March 29-30.
