MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Men's Lacrosse began Southern Athletic Association play in today's midday contest against Centre College, clinching their first conference win at 8-7.
Transfer goalie,
Addison Irwin shined for the Vikings today with nine total saves playing all 60 minutes.
The Colonels started the scoring with their first goal in the opening two minutes. This stung for the Vikings after falling to this team last year in triple overtime.
However, they took this as momentum and fired back at Centre, scoring the next three goals to take the 3-1 lead after the first.
Centre owned the second period, outscoring the Vikings 5-3, with
Michael McKenzie scoring his second goal of the game.
The third was an important 15 minutes both offensively and defensively for the home team. The first ten minutes was stagnant for both teams, each trying to prove themselves tied at six right after halftime.
Joey Cuthbert and McKenzie finally got two to slide past the new Centre goalie for a 8-6 lead with four minutes left before the fourth.
Irwin still held strong and allowed no goals for the Colonels in the third, which was extremely beneficial for the Vikings.
Centre found an early goal in the fourth to cut the lead to one, but Berry refused to give up and each team held off the other for the next twelve minutes of play with the Vikings securing the win.
The Vikings continue their home stint next Tuesday at 6:00 PM ET against Southern Virginia.
