Vikings Stay Perfect with Sweep of Wartburg

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Softball increased to 10-0 for the start of the 2024 season with two wins over Wartburg today 13-6 and 3-1.

Game One 13-6:

In their longest game of the season thus far, the Vikings had an amazing show offensively against the Knights.

After giving up an early homerun in the first, it was time for Berry to make their mark and shut down Wartburg.

Ava Fouts reached after being hit by a pitch and with one out, Katie White singled to the short stop to put two runners on. A perfectly laid bunt by Shelby Daniel loaded the bases with Anna Jackson up to bat.

Jackson singled to tie the game at one with an RBI. Now it was time for the show, sophomore Casey Holloway took a few pitches and then smacked one over center field for a GRAND SLAM.

At 5-1, the Vikings brought in three more runs against Wartburg to close out the first inning at 8-1.

Wartburg still held their grown and added three runs in the second to cut the deficit, but it would not be enough to catch the enormous lead the Vikings had built.

Jackson tripled to right field in the bottom of the fourth for an RBI that continued Berry's scoring and by the top of the seventh, the Vikings had found their 13th run looking for three outs to finish the game.

Ava Fouts and Holloway combined for seven strikeouts in the circle.

Game two 3-2:

The #3 team almost lost their way in game two against the Knights.

Wartburg's pitcher played tough in the first five innings. Not allowing any runs, and barely any hits for Berry.

The Knights offensive took an early lead in the second with two runs after a two-run single put them on the board.

Now the Vikings needed to fight from behind. A nail-biting bottom of the sixth took hold and the nerves went away for Berry as they performed.

Elly Bennett's double to left field and a hit by pitch placed two runners on with one out. Runsick reached on a fielder's choice and now with two outs, the Vikings chances of scoring looked slim, and they would have to have a huge final inning to take the win. However, back-to-back errors for the Knights handed the Vikings the game.

One run scored off the error and Jackson hit a two-run single to take the lead late at 3-2. Now all Berry needed was three outs to seal the deal.

Danielle Sudick closed it out and secured the win!

The Vikings return to action at the NFCA Lead Off Classic this weekend, beginning on Friday at 3:30 PM ET against Randolph Macon.
