NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Vikings hit the road to Christopher-Newport to take on the host team, falling in three sets.
All three sets were close with
Bella Boston leading with a season-high 19 kills, fed by
Lindsey MacDiarmid who posted 30 assists on the night.
During set one, the Captains took the lead after the initial opening point was placed by
Lura Underwood. After that, CNU controlled the entire set with the Vikings only being able to come as close as 13-11, down two, but the Captains hung on as Boston threw down five kills in the set falling 25-20.
A repeat of set one came in set two with the Vikings taking the opening point, then the Captains going on a run. Berry tried to rally behind Boston's nine set kills, five of them coming almost consecutively to put Berry down two (15-13). A major block from freshman
Blakely Barnes tied the game at 20 and after some back and forth kills, the Captains secured the final two points, one from a Viking error (25-23).
Berry held on and held a challenging third set, taking a two point lead at 12-10 from a kill by the one and only
Bella Boston. However, they could not hold on to the lead long as CNU took back the crown and posted a 5-0 run to create distance and finalize the game in three (25-17).
The Vikings will continue play at the CNU Invitational tomorrow taking on Averett University and the University of Mary Washington at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, respectively.
