MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - A pair of goals off the boot of
Christina Marijanich helped Berry to start the 2023 season on the right foot as the Vikings defeated visiting Brevard, 3-0, Friday evening at Bob Pearson Field.
Marijanich would get the scoring started in the 10th minute as she won the ball during a goal-mouth scramble and slid the ball into the net to open Berry's account for the new season. On the stroke of 20 minutes, Marijanich would score again.
Alexis Reigel would get her first career assist for the Vikings as she found Marijanich who sliced the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
Early in the second half,
Savannah Courtenay would earn a corner kick for Berry. She would deliver the corner kick herself, sending a swinging ball towards the six-yard box. There to find it would be
Nicole Knight, who struck the one-time shot past the sprawling Brevard keeper and into the net to close the scoring.
Berry (1-0) would limit the guests to five shots on target, with
Maggie Jones recording three saves in her return from a season-ending ACL injury at the end of 2022 spring practice.
Avery Fowler would play the final 20 minutes, collecting two saves to finish the combined shutout.
The Vikings will be back in action Monday for a Labor Day contest at Emory. Kickoff in Atlanta is set for 1 p.m.
