Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | by Jason Hanes

Season Closes in Quarterfinals for Men's Lacrosse

Berry's men's lacrosse season came to a tough conclusion Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., as the Vikings fell to Birmingham-Southern, 15-12, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championships.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead within the first 6:15 of the contest. Michael McKenzie and Tyler Banfield each scored a pair of goals in the opening stages of the game to send Berry into the advantage. After a BSC goal, Joey Cuthbert found the back of the net to restore the four-goal lead, 5-1.

From there, the Panthers would score four goals in a run that started at the end of the first quarter and continued into the early parts of the second, tying the game at 5-all. Cuthbert would find the back of the net to stop the run, as the teams traded two goals each to end the half.

BSC would score the first two goals of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 10-8. Davis Cooke would get Berry back into it with a goal to cut the advantage to one, but soon BSC would stretch the lead out to three, 13-10, with 9:20 to go in the fourth. Ethan Perlakowski would help get the Vikings back on the doorstep with a pair of goals within 74 seconds of each other, making it 13-12 with 6:51 to go in the game.

That would prove to be Berry's final goal of the season. A BSC goal with 4:40 to go and then a goal off the ensuing faceoff closed the scoring in the contest.

McKenzie scored a team-high four goals for the Vikings in the loss, while Banfield and Cuthbert each had two assists to go with their two goals for four-point games. Nick English went 17-of-30 on faceoffs with eight ground balls and a goal to his credit.

The Vikings close the season with a record of 6-7.
