MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - No. 5 Berry got off to the ideal start to Southern Athletic Association play as the Vikings swept a doubleheader from visiting Sewanee by identical 8-0 scores at Kay Williams Field in softball action.
Game One: Berry 8, Sewanee 0 (6)
Blair Hall and
Casey Holloway combined for a no-hitter as the Vikings took a game one victory.
Hall was sharp in the circle, striking out 10 batters over five innings to improve to 5-0. Holloway pitched the sixth and rung up a strikeout as well.
The Vikings struck first as a sacrifice fly from
Anna Jackson scored
Katie White for a 1-0 lead in the first. Berry tacked on three more in the third, starting the scoring as Jackson picked up her second RBI with a single to score White for the second time. A double by Hall plated Jackson and a triple into the gap in right center by
Morgan Frye scored Hall for a 4-0 advantage.
Three more runs scored in the fifth, with Frye drawing a bases loaded walk,
Katie Parker knocking a single up the middle, and
Latifa Madesko lifting a sacrifice fly to center. Frye would close the scoring one inning later when her blooper into right fell for the game-ending RBI single.
Game Two: Berry 8, Sewanee 0 (6)
Madison Hollis and
Danielle Sudick combined for the shutout as the Vikings rolled to another run-rule victory in the second contest.
Hollis went four innings for the Vikings, giving up just three hits while fanning five. Sudick worked the final two innings in the circle, striking out three of the six batters she faced.
White went 4-for-5 in game two, scoring her only run of the contest when she came home to score on a Hall single in the first. With Berry up 2-0, a throw to third to try to pick off Hall would go off the designated player's back and into left. Hall would trot home to score to make it 3-0.
Frye drove home her second run of the game in the fourth as she drew a bases loaded walk. In the fifth, the Vikings broke the game open with two runs.
Jamie Jang's single to center scored
Lauren Cothern for a 5-0 lead. Sudick then hit a hard shot through the legs of Sewanee's third baseman, bringing in Jang to make it 6-0.
Sydney Moroney would be the one to end the game for the Vikings. With the bases loaded, Moroney dumped a single into left center, scoring Cothern and
Elly Bennett to close the game out in six frames.
The Vikings will be back in action Sunday as they wrap up the series with Sewanee. First pitch is set for Noon.
