MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -
Tyler Banfield scored a season-high seven goals as Berry jumped out to a five-goal lead in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run in the third quarter by Rhodes would doom the Vikings as Berry fell 15-12 in Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse action from Valhalla Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings (5-4, 1-2 SAA) led 5-3 after a quater as Banfield came up with a hat trick in the opening 15 minutes of action. The first half of the second quarter would be dominated by the Vikings as
Ethan Perlakowski, Banfield, and
Davis Cooke each scored to make it 8-3 with 6:15 to go before halftime.
From there, Rhodes (8-3, 2-0 SAA) would go on a shock 9-0 run, including a 7-0 third quarter, to take the lead 12-8. Berry would be stymied offensively in the third quarter, getting just two shots on target and four total for the 15-minute period.
The Vikings would attempt to mount a rally in the fourth. After
Nick English won the opening faceoff of the quarter, Banfield would score 61 seconds into the period to make it 12-9. Then, with the Vikings on the man-advantage, Banfield would rifle home another shot to make it 12-10 with 11:59 remaining. However, two goals would be as close as the Vikings would come to tying the game the rest of the way as the Lynx scored the next two goals to make it 14-10 and pull away for the win.
The Vikings will return to action Sunday at Birmingham-Southern. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
