The No. 5-ranked Berry softball team defeated Southern Athletic Association foe Centre College 9-1 (5) and 10-4 on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Game one: Vikings 9 Colonels 1 (5)
The Vikings loaded the bases in the second inning, as the Colonels walked
Jamie Jang,
Anna Jackson came in to score the first run of the game.
Shelby Daniel then doubled to bring home
Lauren Cothern and
Aleeya Thornton. Continuing the momentum,
Sydney Moroney singled to center field to score two more runs in Jang and Daniel, and suddenly, the Vikings had an early and comfortable 5-0 lead.
Berry's offense continued to roll in the third inning with a Jackson two-run homerun, scoring
Katie White in the process.
Moroney tacked on a run in the fourth thanks to defensive errors from the Colonels to make it 8-0. Thornton scored in the fifth on a wild pitch to cap off the game one victory and handing the Colonels their first league loss of the season.
Hannah Gore (6-0) pitched four scoreless innings in the circle, only allowing two hits and striking out four.
Madison Hollis ended the game for Berry allowing only one run and striking out one.
Game two: Vikings 10 Colonels 4
Morgan Frye got things going early with a homerun out to center field, which would be the only run of the first inning. The Colonels answered with a single run of their own on a sac fly, tying the game at 1-1 the end of one inning.
The Vikings got rolling in the third inning as White homered to take back the lead. Thornton singled to left field, sending Jackson home, then
Grace Hamilton flew out to center field to score Cothern.
In the fifth,
Katie Parker was able to reach first on an error, but then managed to find her way to third as the Centre defense continued to lack answers to the Vikings.
Slowly but surely, Berry distanced themselves as Cothern doubled to right field to score White and Frye in the top of the sixth. Centre was able to score three runs in the sixth to decrease the deficit to three runs, but Berry answered right back with three runs of their own in the seventh. Frye singled to score
Elly Bennett, White lifted a sacrfice fly to center field to send Moroney home, then
Paige Bennett doubled to score Frye.
Danielle Sudick (3-0) got the win for game two pitching six innings, only allowing one run and striking out four.
The Vikings will look to sweep the series on Sunday, with first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
