Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Fall in Program's Longest Game

In the first triple overtime game in program history, Berry's men's lacrosse team fell at Centre, 12-11, in Southern Athletic Association play in Danville, Ky., Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings have played multiple overtime games before, but Saturday's contest was the first to go into a third extra session. Both teams had chances to win the game in the first four-minute extra session, but Berry's two shots on cage were saved while Centre's attempts officially on goal were save by Rob Maraski. A shot from Centre just before the first overtime horn rang off the post to send the game to a second overtime.

After a Maraski save in the second overtime, the Vikings (4-3, 0-1 SAA) came back down field but the would-be winning shot clanged off the post in Berry's best scoring opportunity of the period.

In the third overitme, Berry's first two shots of the session went wide. Centre (5-1, 1-0 SAA) would get another chance to win, but Maraski stood tall for his 13th save of the game. The Vikings would get the clear, but a turnover gave the Colonels one more chance. A Centre shot went wide, but the home side maintained possession. Finally, after over 71 minutes of play, the Colonels would get the game-winning goal with 48 seconds left in the third overtime.

The Vikings led 4-2 after the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals from both Tyler Banfield and Michael Beirne. Banfield completed his hat trick early in the second quarter, then a Nick English faceoff win led to a sprint down field and a quick pass to Michael McKenzie for a goal and a 6-2 lead. Centre would bounce back, scoring two before halftime and adding a third ealy in the third quarter to make it 6-5. Banfield would break a near 20-minute scoreless streak for the Vikings with a goal at 6:49 of the third quarter to help the Vikings maintain the lead, but the Colonels would score the next two goals to tie the game, 7-7.

Berry opened up another two-goal advantage as McKenzie made good on an assist from Dillon Marchant late in the third quarter, then Davis Cooke scored early in the fourth to build a 9-7 lead. With Berry up 10-9, Joey Cuthbert would score push the lead back to two with 4:35 left in regulation. That would end up being the final goal of the game for Berry. Centre would take advantage of a Berry turnover to make it 11-10, then off only the eighth faceoff win of the game for the Colonels, a quick goal would tie the game at 11-all with 3:26 to go, setting the stage for the late drama.

English went 20-of-28 on faceoffs for the Vikings with nine ground balls. Berry had 60 shots in the game, with 29 on target, compared to 39 and 25 for Centre.

The Vikings will return home to Mt. Berry, Ga., for its next SAA contest, this Friday against Hendrix. Opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
