Vikings Rally to Stun Oglethorpe

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.— Sylvia Kahoro put up 22 points for Berry to lead it to a 64-63 win after trailing Oglethorpe the entire game Sunday afternoon in The Cage Center in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship.

"Last year we lost to them in the playoffs, and then this year I said it's just unfinished business," said Kahoro, who almost single-handedly kept the Vikings in the contest through the first three quarters.

The Vikings played phenomenal defense and continued to make their shots in the fourth quarter to take them on a 16-2 run. Sarah Wright drained a three to bring the deficit to 53-51 with 6:26 remaining in the game. Later, Kahoro brought the score to a tie at 55-all with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. The Vikings took their first lead of the game with 2:27 remaining as Kenadie Lee drove in for layup to bring the score to 57-55.

Berry (16-10) put up some key free throws within the last 14 seconds with Sydney Blankenship and Wright each making their free throws. Blankenship secured some clutch free throws for the Vikings, going 7-for-8 in the game. Berry led by three in the waning seconds, but Oglethorpe drove inside for a lay-up to try and force Berry to make more free throws. The initial shot missed, and the follow went in at the buzzer, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings held the lead for good once securing it late.

Oglethorpe (10-15) got ahead early, putting the first five points on the board and beginning the game on a 10-2 run. Kahoro drained a three with 2:41 left in the first frame to bring the game to a six-point difference, 13-7. The Vikings finished the first down six points with the score at 15-9.

In the second, Elizabeth Sierzant began a 9-2 run for Berry to tighten the Stormy Petrels lead, bringing the score to 20-18. Kahoro tied the game up with 3:03 left in the first half to take the score to 23-23; however, the Vikings were trailing by four heading into the locker room at the half.

The Vikings kept the score difference within reach throughout the third frame. Kahoro made back-to-back three-pointers to tighten the deficit to 43-38 with 2:47 remaining in the third. The Stormy Petrels stretched the lead to eight to end the third quarter, setting the stage for the heroics of the final 10 minutes.

The Vikings had three players score in double-digits behind Kahoro as Blankenship had 12 points and Sierzant had 11.

Berry will play in the semifinals of the SAA Championships Saturday at a location and time to be determined.
