Four players scored in double-figures for No. 25 Berry as it defeated Southern Athletic Association opponent Sewanee, 85-67, on the road in Sewanee, Tenn., Friday evening in men's basketball play.
The Vikings did not give the Tigers a chance to take the lead throughout the second half.
Braxton Benham drained two 3-balls back-to-back to take Berry's lead to seven with 16:15 on the clock and send Berry on an 11-0 run. The Vikings continued to grow the lead throughout the second period, with the largest lead being 18 points at the final.
Berry (21-2, 12-0 SAA) battled back and forth for the lead with the Tigers throughout the first half, with Berry having the lead for just over eight minutes. With 2:18 remaining in the frame, Benham dunked to put the score at 30-29. Sewanee (14-9, 7-5) turned around and put the score at 31-30 on the next trip down.
Michael Johnson closed the scoring in the half as he drained a three-pointer to take the lead, making the score 33-31 as the Vikings headed into the locker room. Neither team held a lead greater than five throughout the first half.
Benham led the Vikings with 19 points, Johnson with 17 points,
Chase Ellis with 13, and
Blake Campbell with 12. Ellis led with seven rebounds and Benham, Johnson, and
Jordan Krueger all had five.
The Vikings will continue on the road in Danville, Ky., Sunday afternoon with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. against SAA opponent Centre.
