Third Straight SAA Conference Championship for the Vikings

Box Score

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.- The No.12-ranked Berry College volleyball team claimed their third straight Southern Athletic Association conference title on Sunday afternoon defeating Sewanee in four sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-27, 25-16). With this win, the volleyball program reached their tenth SAA tournament title.

The Vikings brought their A game to start the first set, cruising to a 8-2 lead forcing a Tiger timeout. Back to back blocks from Olivia Mallow and Bella Boston propelled Berry to a 17-8 lead, and continued to overwhelm Sewanee on all cylinders. The Vikings put up five blocks in the first set alone, and the Tigers contributed nine attack errors which helped the first set only last 26 minutes.

A massive kill from Lura Underwood and a service ace from Kara Schmit got the Vikings on track in the second set after finding themselves down 4-0. Three straight monster kills from Jazzy Innis got Berry back where they wanted to be 11-8, and sent Sewanee into another timeout. Berry kept climbing the ladder, and thanks to three more kills from Innis, Berry made it set point 24-18.

The Tigers climbed ahead to 10-7 early in the third set thanks to three consecutive kills. The rest of the set proved to be much more contested than the previous sets, as Sewanee fought hard to keep their hopes alive. After being tied at 25 a piece, the Tigers found a way to end the third set in their favor.

Despite the setback, Berry kept rolling in the fourth. A massive block from Boston and Cypress Guenther moved the Vikings lead up to 10-4. The Vikings held Sewanee at a six-point arms length for the majority of the set. Innis brought the score to 20-11 as Berry kept cruising to the win. Mallow was the one to seal the deal, putting down a kill.

Innis led the team with 19 kills, Underwood followed with 13 also leading in digs with 24. Lindsay MacDiarmid recorded 48 assists, and Mallow totalled 3.5 blocks. MacDiardmid, Mallow and Innis were named to the all-tournament team, Innis was named MVP.

The Vikings look to continue their season in the NCAA National Tournament, earning an automatic bid with today's win. More details will be announced at a later date.
