MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - In honor of Parents Weekend, Berry's volleyball team threw a block party Saturday at the expense of Millsaps, as the Vikings earned a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-11, 25-14) of the Majors inside The Cage Center with the home side amassing 10 total blocks in the Southern Athletic Association match.
"We had a really good day defensively," said Berry head coach
Caitlyn Moriarty. "Our blockers got a lot of touches on balls and made it easier for our back row players. We fought really hard on some long rallies and kept the momentum on our side for most of the match. I'm really happy with our overall team performance today."
The Vikings (8-2, 4-0 SAA) found themselves trailing 5-1 in the first set, but a 13-2 run would soon see the Vikings take a 14-7 lead in the frame.
Emily Rapach would take advantage of tight passes to the net to convert for four kills in the set, with the last one giving BC a set point chance at 24-14. One block later by
Peyton Breissinger and
Olivia Mallow, Berry took the opening frame 25-14.
Up 7-5 in set two, the Vikings went on a 6-0 run, with five points coming during
Kate Whittle's serve. A serive ace by the sophomore sparked the rally, while a block by Mallow and
Jazzy Innis helped to keep the run going. Ahead late 22-11, a Rapach kill and a
Lilly Teagle kill gave Berry set point, which would be converted thanks to a Millsaps attack error, giving the home side a 25-11 win.
Coach Moriarty emptied the bench in the third set as every healthy player ended up seeing action in the match.
Cypress Guenther and
Lindsey MacDiarmid each had five block assists in the set, with Guenther adding a team-best four kills in the frame.
Lura Underwood had a pair of assists and
Cadence Maxfield dished out seven assists as the Vikings rolled to a 25-14 win in the set and a 3-0 win in the match.
Berry held Millsaps (5-7, 1-3 SAA) to a -.060 attack percentage for the match. The Vikings had 37 kills spread out across a dozen players, with Breissinger's seven kills leading all Vikings. Whittle had a match-high 18 digs as she improved her season average to 5.36 digs per set.
The Vikings will be back in action Sunday as No. 23 Birmingham-Southern visits The Cage Center for a noon first serve.
