MOUNT BERRY, Ga.- Before the start of the 2022 season for the No.10 Berry Vikings,
Blair Hall hadn't played softball in four years. But this season, she decided that she was going to dust off her cleats, and "play some softball." In the first game of the NCAA D III Super Regional Series, not only did she not give up a single run, but she also hit the game winning home run.
The first three innings went by quickly as Hall and Bethel pitcher Kayla Simaeck made sure their opposing batters stayed off home plate. The Viking defense held down their home field as they made a double play to end the second inning, hoping to bring some momentum to life.
But Simacek continued to shut down the offense, a place where the Vikings hadn't found themselves in quite a while.
The runless scoreboard continued into the seventh inning, as
Hannah Gore came in to pitch for Hall. Both teams found themselves even in every category: zero runs, four hits, and one error each as the extra innings commenced.
Morgan Frye put Berry ahead with one more hit and found herself on first base in the top of the ninth inning, looking for a way to end game.
Hall stepped up to the plate, taking two strikes before she hammered a ball out to center field putting the stands on their feet. Gore secured the win with a ground out to win game one.
The Vikings will look to win the Super Regional at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kay Williams Field. An "if" game will be played at 3:30 p.m. if Bethel takes Game 2.
