Berry baseball's second trip to Lookout Mountain, Ga., this season proved to be more fortuitous than the first, as the Vikings Covenant College by a final score of 6-4. Senior hurler
Mark Swett recorded his first collegiate win, earning the decision out of the pen.
After a scoreless first frame, the Vikings (23-11) would capitalize on a defensive miscue from the Scots and plate their first two runs of the game.
Levi Cloud was the beneficiary of the two-base error which put him on third base with one out. A single from
John Poist would score him in the next at-bat.
Trevor Barron then found a gap in the outfield, doubling home Poist and making the score 2-0.
The Scots (13-16) would rally in the fourth and plate three runs on two hits, taking their first and only lead of the ball game. The top of the lineup for Berry would curtail the Scots' time on top, however.
Jack Poist singled to lead-off the top half of the following inning and, after stealing second,
Wesley Wade would record his first of two RBIs on the day, singling in the sophomore.
After staying deadlocked through the fifth, the top of the order would again produce.
Jack Poist and
Joey Garcia would tally RBIs out of the top two spots in the lineup, scoring Barron and Hardee, who had both reached on singles. An RBI groundout from Wade would give the Vikings a three-run lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning.
It was a bullpen game for the Vikings on the rubber. Kobe Dunn, Swett, and
Will Macolino all threw two innings apiece with Swett becoming the pitcher of record. After a scoreless ninth, senior
Andrew Norred recorded his first save of 2022.
Jack Poist paced the Vikings in hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Wade, Hardee, and Barron all had multi-hit days.
The Vikings will play host to the Rhodes Lynx this coming Friday and Saturday to wrap up Southern Athletic Association play at home for the regular season. The Friday doubleheader is set to start at 2 p.m.
