It took extra-innings for a winner to be decided in Maryville, Tenn., on Tuesday, as Maryville rallied to beat Berry, 8-7, in 10 innings.
A first inning error allowed the game's first run in the bottom of the first as Maryville jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. The Vikings retaliated in the top of the second inning, however.
Wesley Wade singled to lead-off the inning, and
Andrew Pendleton walked to put two runners on with nobody out. Both would come in to score following a Maryville error which put freshman
Joey Garcia on first. Garcia himself would complete the trip around the bases after an infield single from
Blake Hyman made the score 3-1.
The Scots would score a run in each of the first three innings of play thanks in-part to a solo homerun in the second and a lead-off double in the third.
With the game tied at 3-all, a
Trace Cate single in the top of the fourth coupled with an RBI double from
Nick Brunswick would give the Vikings a one run advantage, and they wouldn't stop there. The top of the fifth inning saw three more runs cross the plate in favor of the Vikings thanks to two-out hitting. Walks to Wade and Pendleton set the table for Garcia who singled through the left side, scoring Wade and moving Pendleton into scoring position. Then, following a Garcia stolen base, Cate would find a gap in the outfield, doubling home both baserunners, making the score 7-3.
The Scots would hold the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way and score five unanswered runs, including one in the tenth inning to shock the Vikings in extras.
Trace Cate was the only Viking to record multiple hits, going 2-5 with two RBIs.
Getting the start against the Scots and making his collegiate debut was freshman RHP CJ Whaley. He would go three innings, giving up two earned runs, and recording two strikeouts.
Berry returns home this Saturday and Sunday to face the Oglethorpe University. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
