Vikings Battle, Fall Short Against No. 25 Denison

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Fresh off its win against No. 4 Adrian Friday night, (RV) Berry had its sights set on No. 25 Denison Saturday and looked to improve to 2-0 in the Berry Invitational. After trading runs for much of the game, however, Denison would break away from the Vikings in the ninth, scoring six and going on to win the contest by a score of 9-4.

A leadoff homerun for Denison put the Big Red out in front early. Facing a 1-0 deficit, Berry looked to even things up in the second. Singles from Wesley Wade and Trace Cate set the table for Trevor Barron to tie the ballgame with an RBI sacrifice fly.

With the game still tied in the fourth inning, John D'Amelio led off with a single and later came around to score on a pinch-hit single off the bat of Ronnie Caricofe. The first RBI of Caricofe's career coming at a pivotal time, giving the Vikings the lead.

Scoring opportunities were few and far between for both sides all afternoon but the Vikings would take advantage of three two-out walks in the fifth inning to push across their third run of the game to take the lead, 3-2

Denison would answer the call again in the seventh and knot the score up at 3-all. Then, an eighth inning bunt-squeeze from Dalton Smith, reminiscent of the walk-off against Pfeiffer a few weeks back, scored Cate to give Berry the lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Things would go awry for the Vikings in the ninth. For Denison, their bats would come alive and feed off Berry miscues in the field. Six runs on five hits would demoralize the Vikings and the game would end with the final score of 9-4.

Tyler Cassidy made his third start of the season and pitched five innings, scattering seven hits and only surrendering two runs. Spence Johns and Trace Cate led the team in hits, both going 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

The Vikings' next opportunity will come tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against Greensboro College with a chance to go 2-1 as hosts of the Berry Invitational.
