Vikings Stop Centre at the Horn

Ally Washburn's save on a free position shot as time expired enabled Berry to complete a comeback in its Southern Athletic Association opener, as the Vikings rallied from down three at halftime to win 11-10, over Centre in Danville, Ky., Friday night. The win was the first for the Vikings over Centre in program history.

Berry (5-1, 1-0 SAA) trailed 7-4 midway through the third quarter, but goals from Abby Sprayberry, Molley Cross, and Haley Larsen enabled the Vikings to tie the game before the end of the period 7-7. Maddie Mashburn gave Berry its first lead of the game with just over three minutes gone in the fourth quarter as her goal on the advantage made it 8-7.

Centre (1-4, 0-1 SAA) rallied to take a 10-9 lead with just over five minutes to go. Cross would score her third goal of the game with 2:16 left to tie the game once again. Centre would get the next draw, but a ground ball on an errant throw was picked up by Cydney Maddox to give the Vikings a chance to score. Larsen's shot would be denied, and the Colonels again possessed. This time, Maddox would both cause the turnover at 47 seconds to go and get the ground ball to get the Vikings back on offense. Berry quickly broke the other way, with AnnaKate Estock feeding Sprayberry for the go-ahead goal with 27.8 seconds to go, making it 11-10.

Centre would earn one more crack at goal off the next draw control. With two seconds left, Lisa Bemis would get whistled for a body check on a loose ball, putting Bemis off with a yellow card and giving the Colonels a free position opportunity. Washburn would stand tall, going low with her stick to keep the shot out just before the final horn, giving the Vikings the thrilling win.

For Berry, the fifth win of the season is the most since the team went 9-9 in the 2017 season. The win also marks the first time the squad has been four games over .500 since the 2015 campaign.

The Vikings will stay in the Bluegrass State for a Sunday contest against Asbury. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
