A very competitive game in Buena Vista, Va., saw a decision go against Berry's men's lacrosse team Saturday as the Vikings fell, 10-9, to Southern Virginia.
The Vikings (4-2) trailed 2-0 early, but three consecutive goals for the guests made it 3-2 in the second quarter, with
Noah Steiner,
Joey Cuthbert, and
Matt Gilbert each scoring for BC. Three more goals, including two on the man-advantage, for the Knights, gave SVU back the lead midway through the second, but Cuthbert scored on the man-advantage to pull Berry back within one, 5-4, at the half.
Berry would never lead in the second half, but down 9-6, a goal by Steiner before the end of the third quarter pulled Berry within two heading to the fourth.
Nick English found the back of the net with 4:15 to go to make it 9-8, but SVU scored an insurance goal to make it 10-8.
Tyler Banfield would score to pull Berry back within one, 10-9, with 75 seconds left, but that would be as close as the Vikings would get. The teams would turn the ball over, with SVU getting the final clearance to close the game out.
RJ Maraski would make 14 saves in the loss for the Vikings.
Berry will be back home Tuesday to face Carthage at 7 p.m.
