A balanced attack and a big blocking effort helped No. 8 Berry defeat Randolph-Macon, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21), at the Emory National Invitational Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
In a rare match where no player for Berry reached double-digits in kills, the Vikings (19-3) instead got six total blocks from
Olivia Mallow as part of nine blocks for the team. Randolph-Macon entered the match ranked No. 6 in Region VI, but the Vikings would earn a sweep against their in-region foes.
Randolph-Macon also made an effort to hit away from libero
Kate Whittle, who ranks 10th nationally in digs per set. Instead, the target of the attacks ended up being
Jazzy Innis, who would set a personal season-high for digs in a three-set match with 14 to lead the team. Innis also added seven kills, two aces, and a block.
Peyton Breissinger added a team-best eight kills and seven digs, chipping in an ace and two total blocks to be the only Viking to reach 10 points on the match.
Still, it didn't matter as the Vikings limited Randolph-Macon to a .125 hitting percentage with 23 attack errors. After a four-set win over R-M almost one year to the day in the same building, the Vikings would take the sweep 364 days later.
The Vikings will be back in action Saturday morning as they face Washington & Lee at 10 a.m. before turning around and facing host Emory at 1 p.m.
