Mount Berry, Ga. – Berry College drew 2-2 after a competitive game against Oglethorpe Saturday afternoon at Bob Pearson Field in Southern Athletic Association play.
After many early throws and free kicks and an outstanding shot on goal by
Nathan Carlson, the Vikings (7-2-5, 3-2-2) scored their first goal within the first eleven minutes of the first half. Berry's team captain
Henry Asbill assisted midfielder
Tracy Moon's goal.
"We were pressing Oglethorpe for a while; we forced the right center back to make a mistake and played a back pass. Henry picked up the ball, I screamed 'HENRY!' and he played me through, I took a toss from my left foot and curled around the keeper," said Moon. "It was awesome."
The Vikings ended the first half with a 1-0 lead over Oglethorpe (5-5-5, 2-1-4), with the intensity of the game increasing as Oglethorpe directed its subs against Berry, bringing competitive defense players.
Berry kicked off the second half, but the game switched momentum as Oglethorpe led in possession. The Stormy Petrels evened the score in the first 15 minutes of the second half with a goal from the right side of the box into 6-yard box.
Later on, the Vikings regained possession and scored on a penalty kick taken by Berry's forward Carlson. Late in the season last year, Carlson missed a penalty kick, but this year he stepped up with confidence and scored an exceptional goal.
"I've taken a penalty before and I was a little bit nervous" said Carlson, "but today I ran up with confidence and just hit it into the corner putting us up one more."
Four minutes later, Oglethorpe scored the deciding goal, making it a draw for today's game.
"Today's game was really tough, it was pretty evenly matched, defensively if seemed like if you made a mistake the other team would gotten an opportunity to go for," said Moon, "We are happy we'll get to see them again next weekend."
Berry will be in action next Saturday in the SAA Championship quarterfinals.
