Berry's men's basketball team won its sixth game in a row as it dominated Millsaps College 85-54 in a Southern Athletic Association matchup Sunday afternoon in The Cage. The win puts the Vikings at 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAA.
"The goal was to get the ball inside to Austin [Brooks], and that really made them collapse," said Berry head coach
Trevor Lydic. "And then Riley [Costas] really turned it on, and shot the ball really well. We did some really good things offensively, made some adjustments from Friday night to tonight, and when you make 11 three's that helps too."
Berry struggled to contain the Millsaps offense in the beginning of the first half, as the Majors found success with three-pointers. Then
Riley Costas put the Vikings back in the lead with 16 minutes to go that made it 10-9. After the three-pointer from Costas, the Vikings never trailed again.
Braxton Benham drained a three-pointer to increase Berry's lead to 10 points at 24-14 with just over eight minutes left to go in the half. The Vikings didn't let up on their high-powered offense as Costas hit this third three-pointer of the half, putting Berry up 35-18 with four minutes to halftime. The Vikings continued to play fast and aggressive at the net and built a 23-point lead at halftime, 47-24.
Chase Ellis and
Owen Honroth both started off the second half with three pointers, setting the tone for the rest of the game. The Vikings continued to dominate on both sides of the ball, with Honroth furthering the Vikings lead to 64-29 with 15 minutes to play. Berry kept racking up points, hitting 80 with two minutes left in the contest.
Austin Brooks led the team with 18 points, with Costas added 17 of his own. The team tallied 36 rebounds, seven coming from
Austin Brooks. The team made 11 three-pointers, with eight different Vikings connecting from long range, making a big difference in the contest.
Costas said the high powered offense helps to build the team's confidence. "It's really good to see the ball go in the basket, and when you see the ball go in, you know that the next one has a better chance of going in. That builds confidence overall."
The Vikings will be back in action Friday night against Rhodes at The Cage Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
