Birmingham, Ala. – The men's soccer team claimed the SAA Championship on Sunday afternoon after defeating Centre College 2-1 in double overtime.
The Vikings entered the SAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed and faced Oglethorpe in the semi-final round on Friday. After defeating the Stormy Petrels 3-1, the stage was set for a Viking-Colonel showdown.
On Sunday, Centre went up an early 1-0 and the match remained that way until Aiden Hackett was able to connect with a goal, assisted by
Henry Asbill, with just over three minutes into the second period.
Tied at one, the game went into overtime. Nothing went for either team in first, so second overtime was forced. That was the time Berry needed to connect with a goal to win the championship.
Nathan Carlson, assisted by
Gerard Cabrera, would score and the Vikings would walk away victorious.
Carlson and
Chris Barbieri were named to the All-Tournament team and Cabrera was named the tournament's MVP.
