Football Wins Overtime Thriller to Claim SAA East Title

Danville, Kentucky – The Berry College football team wrapped up their 2021 season undefeated after defeating Centre on Saturday 18-17 in overtime.

Gavin Gray threw for 209 yards and completed 19-32 attempts with two touchdowns. Jonahan Maisonave led in rushing with ten carries for 60 yards. On defense, Connor Cheyunski tallied 15 tackles in an impressive outing, helping hold Centre's explosive offense to just 17 points.

It was a great defensive battle, but Berry struck first following a good field goal from Matthew Syverson in the second quarter. Before the half, Centre tied it up 3-3. With just under 10 minutes in the third, Centre took the lead, 10-3, following an 11-yard touchdown run.

The score would remain the same until late in the fourth quarter when Gray connected with Camera Kawa for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it a 10-10 ballgame and force overtime.

In overtime, the Colonels received the ball first and quickly scored on a 25-yard run to go up 17-10. The Vikings answered back with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Trace Wells to make it a 17-16 game. A timeout was a called and the Vikings came back on the field for an attempt to go for two and the win—and a win is what they would walk away with following a clutch three-yard completion to Kawa to go up 18-17.

The Vikings remain undefeated since November of 2019 and earn their first undefeated regular season since 2017.

With the win, Berry clinched the SAA East division and will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas to play Hendrix for the SAA Championship on Saturday.
