Despite the crazy obstacles this year has presented sports teams with all over the nation, the Berry College men's baseball team is back and excited to be in action.
Due to the Berry baseball team's lack of a spring season in 2020, several seniors were given the option to stay for another year of eligibility and a few of them jumped on that opportunity.
"It has been a crazy process," said
Tyler Calvert. "Overall, everyone is so appreciative to have a final shot at a senior season." Similarly, Zach Walch says that "the past few months has been tough for everyone in our world."
For the baseball team in specific, the challenges fifth year players have faced has been maintaining their role as senior leaders on the team and learning how to abide by the new COVID-19 rules in order to continue with their season.
"I would like to shout out the Berry freshman baseball players," said Walch. "They are continuing to find ways to keep their positive attitudes in such uncertain times; they are truly living what it means to 'Be Berry."
Ben Coker, a veteran pitcher for the Vikings, mentioned his excitement for this season as a whole.
"After the team's hard work and lack of a 2020 season, it makes you appreciate the little things so much," said Coker. "This season means so much to us."
Coming into an unprecedented season, these three seniors are taking the steps necessary to soak up these last few moments. In doing so, the Vikings are moving up in the rankings each week and dominating in each conference series. They have a chance to go far this season.
In their last outing, Calvert, Coker and Walch each are putting up record numbers and showcasing why they chose to come back one more year.
"The sky's the limit," said Walch. "I can't think of a better team to end my final year with."
The Vikings will travel to Rhodes this weekend for a four-game conference series. To keep up with the latest Berry baseball news, follow the team on Twitter @BerryVikings or @BC_Baseball.
