Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

VIKINGS CLINCH SAA REGULAR SEASON TITLE

Rome, Ga.- The Berry Vikings men's basketball team swept the weekend series with SAA opponent Oglethorpe with an 88-79 win on Saturday, clinching the SAA regular season championship and the number one seed in the SAA Conference Tournament.

Friday and Saturday's victories give the Vikings (11-1) the right to host the tournament in the Cage Center at Berry College.

Berry had five players score in double figures, led by Dawson Wehunt and Drew Jones with 15 points apiece. Micah Johnson (14), Riley Costas (13), and Michael Johnson (12) shared in the scoring load for Berry. The Vikings shot a sizzling 59.3% from the field in the second half while holding Oglethorpe to 35.3% shooting for the half.

"I am excited for our players and how they approached the games each week. This is a group of highly motivated, connected guys. They want to win, and want to win for each other, and for Berry College. The circumstances are unique and different this year, but I am so proud of how they competed at a championship level and finished the regular season well."

Game one on Friday night was senior night as the five Seniors were celebrated for their contributions to Berry basketball. Micah Johnson, Dawson Wehunt, Robert Mbenoun, Drew Jones, and Austin Brooks make up the senior class for the Vikings and have each played important roles in one of the best seasons in Berry basketball history. Berry separated from Oglethorpe late in the second half with a 77-61 win. The Vikings were led by Austin Brooks, who was dominant in the paint with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Owen Honroth was instrumental in the win scoring 18 points connecting on 6-11 shots from behind the arc.

"Owen was huge for us and he deserved a game like that. He puts in the work, stays patient, and was the game changer for us in game one. I thought our guys were locked in on defense and really took pride in how they communicated. Overall this was really satisfying to see the hard work pay off for these players. This is a special group!"
