For one final time this season, the Berry football team will take the field at Valhalla with one unified goal – winning for themselves and giving the seniors who have added to the history of the program a proper farewell.
"We've made strides with a young team and we're excited about the future of Berry football," head coach
Tony Kunczewski said as the Vikings close out the regular season Saturday hosting the talented Centre Colonels for a Southern Athletic Association showdown that starts at 2 p.m. "Now we want to send out seniors off in the right way."
The Vikings come into the game with a 6-3 overall record and are 4-2 in the SAA after rolling to a 45-14 SAA road win against Rhodes last week.
"We got off to another good start, but hit a lull," said Kunczewski, who finally pulled away from Rhodes late in the game to seal the win. "It was good to see us put away a team."
On the ground, where the Vikings rushed for 289 total yards, freshman
Brandon Cade led the charge gaining 136 yards on 16 carries, one that went 65 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter that gave Berry a 17-7 halftime lead. Backfield mate
Josh Rogers also got in the scoring act scoring on a 2-yard run at the end of the third quarter and the freshman ended the day gaining 84 yards.
Quarterback
Gavin Gray ended the game completing 9 of 21 for 133 yards and a touchdown, with
Deiondre Wilson hauling in six of those tosses for 111 yards.
Rhodes stayed within striking distance early in the fourth quarter, but that's when the Vikings broke the game wide open when they scored 21 unanswered points thanks to a pair of punt returns by
Brandon Moody that went all the way – his 47-yard TD return sent a single game record for the team – a and a 40-yard "Pick 6" by
Brock Skinner.
John Mancuso and
Connor Cheyunski had 10 and eight tackles, respectively, for Berry against Rhodes, while
Luke Filipkowski joined Skinner in picking off a pass.
Kunczewski knows that a similar game – and perhaps more – will be needed against Centre, which comes to Mount Berry riding a three-game wins streak, the latest victory coming last week in a 30-20 road win over Sewanee that improved the Colonels overall record to 7-2 and their SAA record to 4-2.
In the game against Sewanee, running back Patric Edwards carried the ball 30 times for a career-high 210 yards, an output that gave Centre its first 200-yard rushing performance since 2017.
Junior quarterback Trentin Dupper is a dual threat for the Colonels, having thrown for 1,926 yards and 20 TDs and rushed for 692 yards and eight TDs this year.
"They're a quality opponent," Kunczewski said about Centre, who hasn't traveled to Berry for a game since 2017. "(Head coach Andy) Frye has been there a long time. He runs a great program. There's a reason why they're 7-2.
"We've had some battles with them. We'll definitely have our hands full."
