On a night when the game seemed to be headed into overtime,
Nathan Carlson decided it wouldn't.
With six seconds left in regulation, Carlson gave the Berry men's soccer team its final word when the sophomore forward scored to give the Vikings a thrilling 3-2 Southern Athletic Association win over visiting Birmingham Southern at Pearson Field on Friday night.
The victory gives the Vikings an 8-3-2 overall record and a 2-1-2 conference mark heading into their final home match of the regular season Sunday when Berry hosts SAA foe Millsaps at noon.
The Panthers struck first 7:17 into the match when Trey Hines scored on a penalty kick.
But the Vikings tied the game just shy of 30 minutes in when
Janson Witcher scored off an assist from
Bear Crystal that created a 1-1 deadlock at the half.
The see-saw scoring continued in the second half as the two teams traded goals in the opening 10 minutes.
Henry Asbill gave the Vikings a 2-1 edge just over two minutes in off an assist from
Michael Carboni, then the Panthers responded four minutes later when Pirmin Blattman scored to tie the game, 2-2.
That score stood until Carlson's late strike.
So evenly matched were the teams that both almost equaled each other in shorts with Berry finishing the game with 11, while the Panthers had 11.
Berry keeper Jo
sé Palacios finished the game recording two saves.
