DANVILLE, Ky. – Three Vikings homered in the win, as the Berry College softball team defeated the Colonels of Centre college 14-3 to earn the three-game series sweep on Saturday morning.
Berry opened up scoring early, with Brittany Tuttle capitalizing on a Centre throwing error to cross home plate and give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Colonels answered, as Sarah Fry singled to right center to bring home Cassidy Cook and tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
Genna Telschow then willed her way home in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on a second Centre throwing error, as Berry regained a 2-1 lead. Tuttle singled to center field in the top of the same inning, knocking in Telschow to expand the lead to 3-1.
Katlin Seger tacked on two more runs in the top of the third, as she hit the first home run of the contest for Berry, pushing the lead to 5-1. The Vikings then plated six additional runs in the top of the fourth inning, led by homers from both Elisabeth Federici and MaKayley Cain to expand Berry's lead to 11-1.
Berry then added their final runs of the contest in the top of the fifth, as Federici doubled down the left field line to drive in both Lauren Evans and Kayla Sangrey to move the score to 13-1. Centre would look to prevent the run-rule win, plating two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from Cassidy Cook, but the strong Viking lead was enough to ensure the 13-3 victory for Berry.
Meredith Holland (7-1) earned the win in the circle for the Vikings, tossing four innings, while allowing just three hits and one run, striking out four Colonels. Emily Schechter threw the final inning for Berry, allowing three hits and two runs in the outing.
Federici led all batters in the contest, finishing the day 2-for-3 at the plate, with two runs and four RBIs for Berry. With the win, the Vikings improve to 33-4 overall, as well as 16-1 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Centre falls to 17-16 and 9-9.
