MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Berry College softball team split games on Saturday to advance to the Regional Championship.
In the first game, the Vikings (38-7) fell to the Emory University Eagles (42-4), 5-2.
Brittany Ferrell led the offense, batting 4-for-4 at the plate. Ferrell also added one RBI and scored once for the Vikes. Brittany Tuttle added two hits and an RBI in the game. Marie Collop and Kenzie Fleming rounded out the offense with one hit apiece.
Although Berry scored one run in each of the first two innings, Emory's three runs in the first--and two more runs in the fifth--were enough to ensure the victory.
For the Eagles, Janelle Turnquest, Amy Wray and Ashley Powers each added two hits in the game. Turnquest knocked in four RBIs as well, adding a home run in the outing.
Allie Coronado (9-5) took the loss on the mound for BC. Coronado allowed four hits and three runs. Kassie Howard finished the game in the circle, allowing four hits and two runs in her 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Berry took the nightcap, 6-5 in 10 innings, against SAA rival Birmingham-Southern College to advance to the championship.
Fleming singled to the shortstop in the bottom of the 10th inning. Following the single, Sarah Moore scored on a throwing error to score the winning. Moore scored from first base on the play.
"I knew the first baseman missed the ball, so I when I rounded second I was prepared to go home," said Moore. "Coach waved me in and it was a great feeling to score."
Ferrell and Collop led the offense in game two, adding two hits apiece. Collop also knocked in two RBIs.
Six other Vikes added one hit in the win as well: Tuttle, Moore, Fleming, Elisabeth Federici, Katlin Seger and Allison DeBusk.
Moore, Fleming and DeBusk added the final RBIs in the win.
For the Panthers, Haley Crumpton led the offense with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
Marie Collop (2-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing the final five frames. Collop allowed only five hits, while striking out four BSC batters. She only had pitched 20 innings before today's game.
"I'm on board with doing whatever the team needs," Collop said. "When you pitch behind someone as awesome as Kassie, you just go in and do what is needed. I like following her because we are so different as pitchers."
Taylor Hawkins (20-5) took the loss in the circle for the Panthers. Harkins tossed the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs.
Berry will take on Emory in the Regional Championship tomorrow at 12 p.m. If the Vikings win game one, they will play the Eagles again in a second game for the tournament title.
