COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- Brittany Ferrell doubled to bring home Allison DeBusk in the top of the eighth inning, as the Berry College softball team defeated top-seeded Birmingham-Southern College, 4-3, on Saturday night.
The win improved the Vikings to 35-6 on the year, setting a new program mark for wins in a season. It is the seventh straight year Berry softball has improved its win total.
Berry will play BSC in the SAA Championship on Sunday. The Vikings need to win one game on Sunday for the crown. Should the Vikes lose, they will get a chance again in the second game.
Kenzie Fleming led the Berry offense in the win, hitting 2-for-4 at the plate. She also scored twice in the contest.
Six other Vikings added one hit as well: Ferrell, Brittany Tuttle, Sarah Moore, Marie Collop, DeBusk and Ally Claytor.
Claytor added an RBI for Berry, and Meredith Wrye scored once for the Vikes.
BC jumped to an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the second inning. The Vikings then tacked on two runs and were ahead 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
BSC's ( 35-7) Torrie Garner knocked a two-run homer to push the score to 3-3 and force extra innings.
Kassie Howard (25-2) earned the win on the mound for Berry. She tossed all eight innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out 11.
