DANVILLE, Ky. – The Berry College softball team defeated Centre College twice on Saturday afternoon. Game scores were 4-1 and 6-2.
The wins improved the Vikings to 31-6 overall and 15-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. The losses dropped the Colonels to 16-20 and 9-8.
Elisabeth Federici hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give Berry the 4-1 win in game one. Federici was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored.
Kenzie Fleming added two hits of her own in the victory. Five other Vikes added one hit as well: Brittany Ferrell, Brittany Tuttle, Sarah Moore, Marie Collop and Kayla Sangrey.
BC opened the scoring in game one when Fleming flew out to centerfield to bring home Moore on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning.
Centre answered one inning later when Madison DeBord homered to tie the game at one apiece.
The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when Federici homered to start the BC scoring. Sangrey then doubled in Meredith Wrye and ensure the victory.
Kassie Howard (22-2) earned the win on the mound in game one, pitching all eight innings in the outing. Howard allowed eight hits and one run, while striking out 12 in the effort.
Scoring in four of the seven innings, Berry took the nightcap, 6-2.
Tuttle led the Vikings' offense in the win, batting 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored.
Ferrell and Federici added two hits in the win as well. Ferrell knocked in one RBI and scored twice for the Vikes, while Federici scored once.
Allison DeBusk rounded out the BC offense, adding the final hit of the day.
For the Colonels, Lauren Richards, Jessika Young, Ashley Merkin, DeBord, Torey Hawkins and Alisha Russell each added one hit.
Allie Coronado (8-4) earned the win in the circle for the Vikes, tossing seven innings. Coronado allowed only six hits, two runs, while striking out five in the effort.
The teams will finish their three-game series tomorrow at Centre. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
