Softball Splits on Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Berry College softball team split on Sunday in Gold Bracket Play to finish at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Vikings defeated Lake Forest, 6-5, and fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-3.

The games moved BC to 17-4 overall.

Brittany Tuttle led the Vikes' offense in game one with two hits in the win against Lake Forest (3-6). Tuttle was 2-for-4 at the plate, scored once, and stole three bases for Berry.

Five other players contributed hits in the win: Brittany Ferrell, Sarah Moore, Marie Collop, Kylie Aiken and Kenzie Fleming. 

Both Ferrell and Collop homered in the victory, knocking in two RBIs apiece. Aiken and Moore added the final RBIs for Berry.

The Foresters plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the score to 6-5. Lake Forest's Sally Snarski hit a double to knock in the final run before being thrown out at second by Tuttle to end the game.

Kassie Howard earned the win on the mound for the Vikings. Howard tossed six complete innings, allowed four runs, and struck out eight batters. Allie Coronado earned the save.

In game two, CMS (14-5-1) outhit BC 9-4 en route to the 6-3 defeat.

Ferrell led the Viking offense with two hits in the loss. She was 2-for-4 and scored twice for Berry.

Katlin Seger and Tuttle added the final hits of the contest. Tuttle scored once and stole a base in the loss. Seger added a 2 RBI single in the top of the sixth inning for BC.

CMS was ahead 4-0 at the end of the third. Berry then plated all three of their runs in the top of the sixth.

The Athenas added two insurance runs in the bottom of the same inning to ensure the win.

Coronado took the loss. She threw two innings for Berry, allowed four runs, and struck out one in the process.

Howard finished the game on the mound--allowing two runs and striking out six. Moore was selected to the NFCA Leadoff Classic Tournament team.

Berry hosts Pomona-Pitzer in their next game on Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m.
