ROME, Ga. – The Berry College softball team split their season-opening doubleheader against Maryville College on Saturday. The Scots took the first game, 3-2, while the Vikings took the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.
Marie Collop led the Berry offense in the first game. Collop was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Brittany Ferrell and Sarah Moore each added a hit in the loss as well.
BC was ahead, 2-2, until the top of the sixth when Maryville plated two runs on a fielder's choice and an error to move the score to 3-2.
For the Scots, Elizabeth Wheeler and Casey Joliff each tabbed an RBI in the win.
Allie Coronado (0-1) took the complete-game loss on the mound for the Vikes. Coronado allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out two.
Kayla Aloisi (1-1) earned the complete-game win for Maryville (1-3). She allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out one in the win.
Moore led the Berry offense in the second game, batting 3-for-3 at the plate. She scored two runs and added three RBIs in the win.
Both Collop and Kylie Aiken added two hits in the win as well. Collop was 2-for-3 at the plate and had one RBI. Aiken was also 2-for-3 at the plate, added two RBIs and scored once for the Vikings.
Five other players added hits in the second game: Brittany Tuttle, Kayla Sangrey, Allison DeBusk, Katlin Seger and Karlie Jarrett. Seger knocked in two RBIs as well.
Kassie Howard (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Vikes. Howard allowed four hits and struck out eight in her five innings of work.
The Vikings (1-1) return to Ford Field for their next doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 19 against Depauw University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
