LEXINGTON, Va.—The Berry College volleyball team won both of their matches at the Washington and Lee tournament on Friday making their record 7-0--a program-best start to a season.
In their first match of the day the 22nd ranked Vikings beat Lynchburg 3-0. The set scores were 25-22, 26-24, and 25-17. The Vikings later bested Southern Virginia 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20).
Against LC, Katie O'Rourke had 11 kills and four block assists. Lauren Schmitz had 37 assists and Katie Truluck added to the victory with 15 digs.
In the Southern Virginia match, Emily Stromberg notched a team-best 13 kills. Hannah Kate Thompson had 23 assists and Truluck added 19 digs. Jessica Gum helped the Vikings to win with two solo blocks and 5 block assists.
"We didn't play the prettiest volleyball at times today, but I was really proud of how they responded to the challenges of travel--including a gym with no AC--to finish both matches in 3 sets," said Vikings' Head Coach Mika Robinson. "Both Lynchburg and Southern Virginia had strong servers, but our passers worked hard to keep us in our system. Our setters made great decisions today, and our blocking continues to get better."
The Vikings will play again at the Washington and Lee Tournament on Saturday. Berry plays #7 Wittenberg at 1 p.m. and face host W&L at 3:30 p.m.
