BC softball sweeps Centre; Wins another SAA regular season title

ROME, Ga. - - Besting Centre College in two games, the Berry College softball team clinched their third straight regular season championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings beat the visiting Colonels, 8-0, and 5-4, improving their record to 29-6 overall and 19-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. Centre dropped to 13-16 and 10-12 in the SAA.

After Sunday's doubleheader was canceled due to field conditions, the Vikings secured their third straight SAA regular season crown with its .902 winning percentage.

Backed by Allie Coronado's  1 hitter, BC took the first contest, 8-0, in five innings. Coronado earned the complete-game shutout on the mound, giving up only 1 hit to Centre's Ashley Merkin. She is now 8-3 for the year.

Kylie Aiken (3-for-3) led the Vikings' offense with 3 hits and 3 RBIs in the win.

Ally Claytor (3-of-4) added 3 hits as well for the Vikes. Claytor also drove in one RBI and scored twice in the victory.

Brittany Ferrell (2-for-4) had 2 hits on the night, scoring 1 run and bringing in 1 RBI as well.

Berry took the nightcap in a comeback 5-4 victory over Centre.

Berry took the lead after scoring 3 early runs in the bottom of the first. The Vikings soon found themselves behind when Merkin (1-for-3) hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth to put the Colonels up, 4-3.

BC was still down by one going into the sixth when Ferrell (1-of-3) tripled to right center to score Rachel Bartoe and tie the game, 4-4.

Brittany Tuttle (4-for-4) then came to the plate and scored Ferrell on a single to short, to put the Vikes ahead, 5-4, clinching the win and the SAA title.

Kassie Howard (16-1) led BC on the mound with the complete game win, allowing only 4 hits and 3 earned runs in the victory. Howard also struck out a season-high 12 Colonels in the game.

BC will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, on Friday, April 24, to compete as the top seed in the SAA tournament.​
